THE Minister of Communications will be launching the Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA) today, the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry (AITI) said in a statement.

This year’s BICTA carries the theme “Digital Generation with a Vision”, to focus on building a resilient generation that is always abreast with the latest technologies and persistently strives for innovative solutions.

BICTA is an annual ICT competition that aims to stimulate innovation and creativity in ICT among students, SMEs and organisations, the statement added.

AITI said the competition is an effort by the Ministry of Communications and AITI to encourage and support innovation at the grassroots level.

“Innovation is a key element to spur economic growth of a nation. Innovation is not merely limited to new inventions. It includes how those inventions would be able to solve problems or improve solutions differently, and how those inventions and innovative ideas can be monetised for wealth creation, particularly in the field of ICT,” the statement read.

AITI said the recently-launched National ICT White Paper for Brunei Darussalam acknowledges the link between innovation and ICTs by including innovation as one of its four strategic thrusts.

The theme will help to develop economic sectors that are more productive, which will in turn contribute to the GDP and achieve diversification as envisaged by the National ICT White Paper, it added.
