THE Mukim and Kampung Institution Section of the Brunei-Muara District Office is looking at setting up a ‘one-stop shop’ to showcase the products of local villages.

Noor Sarina Hj Kassim, an officer at the Mukim and Kampung Institution Section, said this would allow the various products and services by Village Consultative Councils (MPK) to be more readily accessible.

“It is our vision to open up a one-stop shop. InsyaAllah it could happen in a short while. A cube shop concept seems plausible but it is still in the works,” she said on the sidelines of the launch of the One Village, One Product (OVOP) Exhibition at the Times Square Shopping Centre yesterday.

“It would be one way to help them. We also want to increase the number of products marketed by the MPKs and help those products... reach a larger market,” she said.

“In terms of handicrafts, we can confidently say that these are truly made in Brunei. For souvenirs, sometimes there are items that say ‘Welcome to Brunei’ but are made in China. The OVOPs are truly local as it is made by our people,” she said.

The OVOPs have also been doing well in the regional market, said Noor Sarina.

Some MPKs have been invited to participate in international exhibitions, she added.

Others have received regional recognition such as the Kg Sungai Bunga MPK’s Seri Tanjung Homestay which received the ASEAN Homestay Award at the recently held 35th ASEAN Tourism Forum in Manila.

“It is our (intention) to enhance their creativity more such as helping them improve their packaging and market their product more effectively. The demand for most of the products offered are promising,” said Noor Sarina.
