DBP to host Brunei Book Fair and Carnival 2016

THE Brunei Book Fair and Empowering Reading Culture Carnival 2016 will be held from February 26 to March 6 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex’s multipurpose hall.

Themed ‘Buku Sumber Ilmu‘ (Books as a Source of Knowledge), the event aims to provide opportunities for interaction between publishers, librarians, book lovers and the general public.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Hjh Rasiah Hj Tuah, head of the Language and Literature Bureau’s (DBP) marketing section and the fair’s secretariat, said the event is also being held to expose the general public to different types of books.

The event will be launched by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports on February 27.

She said the DBP is expecting 70,000 visitors. Last year, the book fair received 60,716 visitors during the 10-day event.

Hjh Rasiah said that during the launching ceremony that appreciation awards will be presented to local authors of best-selling books of 2015 in four categories: general books, literature, children’s books and best publisher.

The ceremony will also see the launching of 43 new books written by locals, she said.

The DBP said the fair and carnival will have 92 stalls altogether selling local and international books.

“There will be vendors from Oman, Jordan, Singapore and Malaysia participating in this event,” she said.

Several activities will be held throughout the book fair such as quizzes as well as performances by local art group Kumpulan Putera Seni.

DBP officer Hilme Md Yahya said several activities will be also be held during the carnival.

“These activities will include storytelling contests, an amazing race readathon and an early literacy activity which is an educational activity for newborn babies and a guide for parents. The activities are organised to promote the reading culture and create awareness to all different age groups and generations,” he said.

The fair and carnival will run from 8.30am to 10pm. Meanwhile, on Fridays, the event will run from 9am to 11.30am and continue from 2.30pm to 10pm.
