ELEVEN babies were born as Brunei turned 32 yesterday.

Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital saw the arrival of nine babies, while Suri Seri Begawan Hospital (SSBH) in Belait district welcomed two baby girls.

Out of the 11 babies, seven were girls and four were boys.

The first newborn was a boy delivered at 12.52am in Brunei-Muara district, followed by another newborn, just three minutes after.

Speaking to new parents at the maternity ward in RIPAS Hospital, Siti Nurul Nirwana Annuar said it was a pleasant surprise as she did not expect her first born to share the same birthday as Brunei.

Accompanied by her husband Pg Hafizul Hilmi Pg Hamdani said their baby boy, who arrived at 4.59 am had his original due date scheduled for February 28.

“Initially, my due date was set for February 28 so the birth came as a complete surprise to us. As soon as my water broke, I told my husband to drive me to the hospital. Alhamdulillah we were both calm,” she told The Brunei Times.

“We are truly blessed,” said the 25-year-old mother.

“As parents, we are thankful to Allah SWT, and we hope that our son will grow to be an obedient, respectful person, who can contribute back to the nation,” said the parents, adding that they have decided to name their newborn Malik Hakimi.

As of press time, no babies were born in Tutong and Temburong districts yesterday.
