Brunei students to compete in Bandung oil rig design contest

FIVE Politeknik Brunei students will represent the sultanate at the Integrated Petroleum Week’s Oil Rig Design Competition in Bandung, Indonesia on February 26.

In a statement released by Politeknik Brunei yesterday, the team of students named “Black Gold Digger”, is the only Bruneian team that will compete with other universities and polytechnics during the Society of Petroleum Engineers Bandung Institute of Technology Student Chapter’s competition.

Before the competition, the students were given a material budget of US$100 to build an oil rig model based on a set specification.

The students will then have a 10 minute presentation on their model during the competition, showcasing the blueprint, preliminary selection process, load testing, buoyancy testing and explaining their design to the panel of experts.

Politeknik Brunei said the international competition will enable the students to gain exposure that would assist in their personal development, and expand their understanding towards the latest developments and technologies in the oil and gas industry at the same time.

The statement added that the competition and event will provide a platform for the students and experts to exchange experiences, ideas and solutions regarding current issues and challenges in the oil and gas industry.

The event is also aimed to provide the students with the platform to strengthen friendships among the students from various universities and experts.

The Brunei team will be led by Acting Assistant Director of Politeknik Brunei Alias Hj Abu Bakar.

Other participants include University Teknologi Malaysia, Trisakti University, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Universitas Indonesia.
