AUTHORITIES are still searching for the 23-year-old local man who went missing in Sungai Belait behind the Water Filtration Tank in Kuala Belait on Thursday night.

Family members of the missing man gathered at the riverbank yesterday waiting for news from members of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and the Fire and Rescue Department.

When The Brunei Times went to the spot around 5.30pm yesterday, the place was still packed with people, with uniformed personnel continuing their search and rescue operations.

Among the units spotted was the Diving Unit from the Fire and Rescue Departments and their boats, together with RBPF boats.

Md Khairul Azmi Abdullah, nephew of the missing man, told The Brunei Times that the local man went missing after he jumped into the water to fix his net, which had gotten stuck in the water.

“According to his father, he made a sound as he jumped. The father, who was fishing few metres away rushed in to check, but he did not see the man anymore, he did not even surface onto the water,” he said.

“Panicked, the father called for help from those around. The authorities were notified at around Maghrib. A search and rescue operation was conducted until today, and we still have not found him,” he added.

The missing man, he said, is married and has two children, one is two years old and the other is aged one.

He said he and his family members will continue to wait at the spot for news from the authorities.

“We will not move until we find him,” he said.
