MORE than 350 copies of Al-Quran were distributed to hospitals in the sultanate’s four districts yesterday.

An association called Meraih Barkah presented the Qurans to officers from RIPAS Hospital, Suri Seri Begawan (SSB) Hospital, Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital and Pengiran Isteri Hajah Mariam Hospital respectively in a ceremony at the Women and Children’s Block of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

The association also donated more than 300 prayer mats, women’s prayer garments and hangers.

The head of the association, Hjh Florinda Hj Mejenis, said the Qurans were donated by people from various backgrounds to foster the daily habit of reading the book.

Hjh Florinda said the association was formed in 2014 with an aim to encourage Muslims to get Allah SWT’s blessings through donating basic necessities such as Qurans, prayer mats and similar items.

She said over 15,000 Qurans were distributed throughout the country’s four districts in 2014 in the hope that it would foster love of the book and Islam in mosques and schools.

“I’ve been carrying out this sort of charity drive for many years. Two years ago, we managed to distribute more than 15,000 Qurans to several institutions and mosques around the sultanate to be used for tadarus and Khatam Al-Quran ceremonies during the month of Ramadhan,” said Hjh Florinda.

She added that last year, as part of their initiative, Meraih Barkah distributed Qurans to various schools in Brunei-Muara district in a bid to fight against ‘social ills’.

“Nowadays, we hear many stories about social problems affecting students in schools. So as part of our charity drive, we make it a priority to ensure that schools have enough Qurans so they can read them before starting their classes. This will help them in being better students,” she said.

Hjh Florinda said Meraih Barkah launched an Al-Quran reading programme last year called ‘One Day One Page’ in various schools including Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Tutong Sixth Form Centre, Rimba Secondary School and Lambak Kiri Secondary School. She added that there are more than 1,000 members registered under their association. Recitation of tahlil and doa selamat was also carried out after the donations were presented.
