Celebrations for HM’s 70th birthday in July on schedule
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 70th birthday celebrations will be held on schedule in July as the monarch’s birthday falls in the month of Syawal this year, the Minister of Home Affairs said yesterday.
This was disclosed at the first meeting of the executive committee for His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations held at the Lapau in the capital.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong said for the past three years since 2013, Brunei has been celebrating the Sultan’s birthday in August, September and October because the monarch’s birthday fell in the month of Ramadhan.
But this year, the monarch’s birthday falls in Syawal, a month where Bruneians celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, he said.
While the date has yet to be confirmed, the minister said the birthday celebrations will be held ‘in a joyous atmosphere during Syawal’.
“InsyaAllah, the birthday celebrations of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, will be held in an atmosphere of joy in the month of Syawal where Hari Raya celebrations will surely still be celebrated,” he said, adding that the festivities during the month will be able to further enliven the atmosphere of this year’s birthday celebrations. The monarch was born on July 15, 1946.
YB Pehin Dato (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar, who chaired the meeting yesterday, said it was held to discuss matters relating to the monarch’s 70th birthday, including the dates for the main highlights and events of the birthday celebration such as the meet-and-greet sessions, knowledge convention and exhibition and installation of decorations including banners and arches.
He also said the district officers have been given the mandate to start discussing the arrangement of the events for the celebration with their committee members.
He also announced in his speech that the national birthday committee is under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah. The head of Adat Istiadat Negara, YAM Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Hj Abu Bakar, was also appointed as the adviser to the national committee.
There are also a few changes with regards to appointments to the Executive Committee for the birthday celebrations, said the minister.
