Bangladeshi jailed for attempted rape

A BANGLADESHI man was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison and 12 lashes for attempted rape and causing hurt while attempting to commit rape.

During the proceedings yesterday before Chief Registrar Justice Pg Hjh Rostaina Pg Hj Duraman, the High Court found 33-year-old Shaidul Malik guilty after the trial had concluded.

The incident occurred on the morning of October 17, 2014 in the vicinity of the Snooker Hall alley of Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas when the defendant attempted to rape a middle-aged woman who is a permanent resident.

The defendant was subsequently brought to court and charged with the offences but maintained a not guilty plea, claiming it was the complainant who asked him to help her and that he fell down.

The minimum penalty that the defendant had faced for the offence under section 376(2) of the Penal Code, Chapter 22, was eight years’ imprisonment and 12 lashes.
