SIXTY needy residents living in and around Kg Sengkurong received daily necessities yesterday at Masjid Sultan Sharif Ali in Kg Sengkurong.

Co-organised by the Mosque Affairs Department, the Sultan Sharif Ali Mosque Committee and youth members of committee, the items were purchased by congregants using funds collected from donation boxes at Masjid Sultan Sharif Ali.

Local printing company EZ Printing Sdn Bhd also donated school supplies to the recipients, which comprised 28 poor and destitute individuals and 32 orphans.

Speaking on the sidelines of the donation handover ceremony, Permanent Secretary of Religious Affairs Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Aziz Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Hj Mohd Yusof said that helping others is a great way to give back to society.

Dato Hj Abdul Aziz, who was the guest of honour, said this act of kindness showed that Bruneians are caring for the destitute, poor and orphans.

“This caring attitude will not only bring joy to them (recipients), but most importantly, it shows that the people in this country are supporting one another to achieve social solidarity and harmony,” he said.

According to a press statement from the Mosque Affairs Department, acts of charity in Islam are one of the ways to implement the concept of helping one another.

With this in mind, Muslims are encouraged to give back to society through charity to promote mutual respect and solidarity in the country.
