Local man fined $10,600 for smuggling 815 kgs of meat

A local man was fined $10,600 for smuggling 815 kilogrammes of beef lungs, chicken wings and chicken rump into the country without a proper permit.Acting on a public tip-off, customs officials caught the defendant, Mohammad Hairulazmi Hamidon, 33, near a boat loading dock in Mentiri. Upon inspecting his vehicle, they found the meat inside.

The defendant said he was paid $250 by an Indonesian man to collect the goods from the loading dock and that he had performed the job 10 times before.

Under section 140 (1) (d) of the Customs Order, anyone who knowingly harbours or conceals untaxed or prohibited goods with the intent to defraud the government of customs duty is liable to a fine of not less than twice the value of the goods or $40,000, whichever is the lesser amount.

The value of the goods is estimated at $5,272. The items were forfeited to the state.

The court permitted the defendant to pay the fine in installments of $350 per month.
