32nd National Day celebration begins

BRUNEI’s giant national flag was hoisted at a ceremony in the capital yesterday to mark the start of the 32nd National Day celebrations.

Measuring 3.7m by 7.3m (12 by 24 feet), the giant national flag was hoisted by the Royal Brunei Navy at the open space of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex.

Attending the event was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Mudim Awang Hj Ahmad Kasra Hj Ibrahim.

This was then followed by the presentation of the giant flag from the MCYS Minister to the Royal Brunei Navy.

Flags and posters were then presented by the guest of honour to all district office representatives.

Present at the ceremony were members of the Legislative Council, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries, district officers, representatives from the government and private sector and penghulu and village heads.

Flag raising and distributing ceremonies were also held in other districts.

The ceremony held at Brunei-Muara was observed by Misle Hj Abdul Karim, acting Brunei Muara District Officer at the district office car park.

In the Tutong district, the flag ceremony was held at the district’s community hall led by the Acting Assistant Tutong District Officer Hj Haizul Rizal Hj Yahya accompanied by the Serunai and Tambur team of the Prisons Department, Tutong District’s volunteers, Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Military Cadets, the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society of Mahad Islam Brunei, Tutong district’s scout association and participants of the elia Cinta Tanah Air (BCTA) programme.

The national flag was presented to the guest of honour Acting Tutong District officer Hj Adnan Hj Adam who then presented it to the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).

In Belait, a motorcade formed by members of the  Belait Scooter Owners Club and Belait Explorers Club lead the arrival of Acting Belait District Officer Hasmiron Hj Mohd Taib bearing the national flag.

After a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and prayers led by  Assistant Mosque Affairs Officer Julazni Hj Zaini, the event began with  the acting district officer  handing over the flag to  a contingent of policemen from the Belait district.

The event  concluded with Hasmiron handing over a flag to each  penghulu representing the mukims of Belait.

Meanwhile in the Temburong district, the national flag was unfurled at the open space of the Dermaga, Pekan Bangar.

Carrying the national flag was the Assistant Tutong District officer Amir Hairil Hj Mahmud accompanied by the district’s grassroot leaders.  

The national flag was then presented by Assistant Tutong District Officer to the guest of honour, the Temburong District Officer Hj Abdul Hamid Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah.

Also present during the ceremony were the Head of the Temburong District Police OCPD Md Azrie Hj Talip, member of the Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Hj Sulaiman Hj Ahad, grassroot leaders, uniformed personnel, private organisations and residents of the district.

The giant flag hoisting at the capital also signals all citizens and residents to fly the national flag at their respective homes, offices and private buildings until February 27.
