A 30-year-old Tutong man admitted yesterday that he attempted to rape his 14-year-old niece last year after she rejected his sexual advances.During the proceedings at the Intermediate Court, the defendant, whose name is being withheld to protect the victim’s identity, further admitted to the charge of raping his niece in 2013 when the victim was 12 years old.

The victim, Miss X, filed a report with the police last year that her uncle had attempted to rape her after she rejected his lewd advances.

After several unsuccessful attempts to locate the defendant, he was subsequently arrested on January 30 this year following tip-offs from the public.

During the investigation, the defendant admitted that he went to Miss X’s house on May 22, 2015, and attempted to rape her after she rejected his acts of groping her and showing his private parts to her.

However, the defendant was unable to rape Miss X as she had successfully resisted and kicked him away.

The defendant also admitted to raping Miss X sometime in 2013 when he left his wife and children at a workshop while bringing Miss X, who came along with them, to a nearby shop.

Instead of going to the shop, the defendant drove to an unknown junction, stopped his car in a dark area and proceeded to rape her. At the time, the victim was unable to fight back because she was in pain.

After he finished raping her, the defendant told Miss X not to tell anyone about the incident, and they proceeded to fetch the defendant’s family at the workshop.

In his mitigation yesterday, the man said he committed the offence because he was having problems with his wife at the time.

“I admit to this offence, and I want to apologise to the victim’s family members that I regret what I have done,” he said.

The defendant, who has been in remand since February 1, was denied release on bail yesterday as the court deemed that he is facing serious charges.

He could be facing up to 30 years in prison and no less than 12 strokes of the cane for the rape charge.

The sentence is scheduled to be heard on February 20 at the Intermediate Court.
