Woman indicted over maid abuse charges

A LOCAL woman was indicted yesterday over charges of physically abusing her Indonesian maid and exploiting her through forced slavery.

During the proceedings before High Court Judge Justice Dato Paduka Hairol Arni Hj Abd Majid, Siti Atiqah Md Raduan claimed trial over five counts of causing grievous hurt to the 44-year-old woman.

The court document filed by Deputy Public Prosecutor Norhayati Omar stated that the 31-year-old had used variations of physical abuse against the victim.

The defendant is accused of repeatedly pinching the victim’s breast which resulted in permanent disfigurement, hitting the victim’s hand with a belt which caused deformed fingers and hitting the victim’s shoulder with a stone pestle on three occasions sometime between March 2011 and September 11, 2012.

Siti Atiqah is also facing a charge under the Trafficking and Smuggling of Persons Order when she recruited the victim for the purpose of exploitation through slavery by use of force.

All of the offences allegedly occurred at the defendant’s home at the police barracks on Jalan Istana Darul Hana.

Defence Counsel Hj Mohammad Rozaiman DSLJ Hj Abdul Rahman said at the time of the incident, Siti Atiqah wasn’t in her proper state of mind when the alleged offences were committed.

He said they will do the utmost to reduce the number of trial dates as they look into submitting the statement of agreed facts as well as submitting the defendant’s medical report from an expert witness.

Siti Atiqah was released on $15,000 bail and two local sureties. She is also expected to report to the Women and Children Abuse Investigation Unit and not to approach the complainant. The trial has been scheduled on March 30.
