Minister of Religious Affairs conducts working visit to Tutong

THE Minister of Religious Affairs paid a working visit to Tutong yesterday to monitor the construction of a new mosque and the development of religious activities in the district.

The delegation, led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awang Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awang Othman, first stopped by the construction site of Masjid Kg Sengkarai, Jalan Pengasing.

The visit was to ensure that construction works on the mosque are on schedule.

It gave the minister a closer look at the mosque, including its structure and environment.

According to information from the ministry, construction of the $3.8 million mosque began in December, last year.

It is scheduled to be completed on December 2, this year.

The project is handled by the Public Works Department under the Ministry of Development with support from funds collected by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) through zakat (tithe) under the Asnaf Al-Gharimin (those in debt category).

The mosque will be able to house more than 1,000 congregants.

It will be equipped with prayer areas for men and women, offices and meeting rooms for mosque officials, a counselling room and kitchen.

The delegation also stopped by Masjid Hassanal Bolkiah in Pekan Tutong to observe a prayer reading workshop conducted by the Mosque Affairs Department.

More than 200 imams and bilals from various mosques across the sultanate are currently participating in the January 30-February 3 workshop.

The workshop hopes to identify the weaknesses of the participants on prayer reading. It also looks to improve their memorisation and fluency skills.

Accompanying the minister during the working visit were the director of Mosque Affairs, Ustaz Hj Abd Rajid Hj Md Salleh, and MoRA officials from Tutong.
