ITB ushers in new student council

OUTGOING members of Institut Teknologi Brunei’s (ITB) Student Representative Council handed over their responsibilities to newly elected members of the 2016/2017 academic session yesterday.

The event took place at the institute’s multipurpose hall and was attended by Associate Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah Hj Sulaiman, Vice Chancellor of ITB.

In her speech, Dr Hjh Zohrah said the student council was an important entity because they contribute to the development of the university as well as help the university achieve its vision and mission.

The institute’s vision is to be among the top 10 universities for Engineering and Technology in Southeast Asia by 2018 and its mission is to provide experiential learning, enhance research and foster partnerships.

The speech was followed by the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the outgoing members as well as appointment letters to the new members by the vice chancellor.

One of the new elected members was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muhammad Abdul Qayyum Pengiran Sura Negara Pengiran Anak Hj Muhammad Bey Muntassir.

He was elected as the new Head of the Economy and Entrepreneurship Executive Committee of the Student Representative Council.

In an interview with reporters, YAM Pg Anak Muhammad Abdul Qayyum said that he aims to collaborate with lecturers from ITB, as well as from other universities, to conduct more talks about entrepreneurship in an attempt to enhance the future SMEs of the country.

He said that he is currently taking his Bachelor of Business in Technology Management in ITB and added that the Economy and Entrepreneurship Executive Committee hopes to conduct an entrepreneurship camp.

“The camp will hopefully be conducted in the second half of the year (and) it will be open to students from all higher education institutions,” he said.

“We hope that, with the help of the other members of the student council, the event will pull through and become a success,” he added.

According to a press statement by the institute, the new members of the MPPITB were elected by their peers and had to go through a selection process that was conducted by previous student council members and selected university staff.

Gracing the event was Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Amal Jefriah.
