3 UNISSA students take top spot at debate competition in Malaysia

UNIVERSITI Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) students did Brunei proud in their performance at the annual Asian Law Students Association (ALSA) Conference in Malaysia.

The Brunei team - Rusyddin Bagul, A’bidah Mahri and Hafiz Hamzulani - was announced winners of the Thomas Phillips Moot Debate Competition as they pitched against other ALSA representatives from Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia and Laos.

The participating debaters discussed matters relating to international criminal law.

Challenges surrounding the topic was given out to the participants a month prior to the event to help debaters prepare.

Meanwhile, two other ALSA Brunei members from UNISSA - Abdul Hakiim Ahmad Zakaria and Nurhani Hj Chipli - won the Best Position Paper after presenting them for the Model United Nations discussions.

A press statement from UNISSA said that the ALSA Conference is among the major events for ALSA International where law students from 15 countries get together to discuss matters in the governing council meeting and give their participation in the moot debate discussions as well as the Model United Nations.
