THE Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) yesterday distributed $2,200 in zakat (tithe) funds to 11 people whose house was recently destroyed by fire in Kg Lurong Sikuna in Kampong Ayer.

The financial assistance, collected through the Zakat Asnaf Fakir Miskin Fund for the poor and needy, was to help alleviate their burden.

On hand to present the monetary assistance was Acting Secretary of MUIB Hj Abdul Aziz Hj Akop in a ceremony at the Ministry of Religious Affairs building.

Mohamad Ariffin Mohamed, his wife, Siti Emilyana Wahid, and their two children received a total of $800 while Siti Emilyana’s uncle, Francis Ali, and his six children received a total of $1,400.

In addition, school aid was also provided for one of Francis’ children who is currently a Year Eight student.

On the sidelines of the event, Francis expressed his heartfelt gratitude to those who have helped his family following the fire on January 17.

“Since the fire destroyed the house, we’ve been staying temporarily with our relatives in Kg Bolkiah ‘A’,” said Francis, who is a boat driver.

Mohamad Ariffin, his wife and their two children have been staying with his parents in Jerudong.

There were no casualties from the fire, which broke out after 10am, but the family lost everything.

The fire didn’t spread to other houses in the water village as the neighbouring houses were built at a considerably safe distance from the burnt house. The fire was put out in 14 minutes.

The family lost all their important documents and were left with only the clothes on their backs. They had called Kg Lurong Sikuna their home for more than 18 years.
