A MALAYSIAN man who is facing a death penalty charge for importing illegal drugs was released on a $30,000 court bail yesterday pending the drug analysis certificate.

The defendant, Sim Sii Khiak, was in remand for almost three weeks while his case was under investigation. Sim was accused of importing over 50 grammes of methamphetamine on January 4 at the vicinity of the Sungai Tujoh Control Post in Kuala Belait. Sim’s defence counsel is Roy Prabhakaran. The penalty carries the death sentence.

During the proceedings yesterday, magistrate Azrimah Hj Abd Rahman granted the defendant’s bail petition after the prosecution did not raise any objection pending the drug analysis certificate. Aside from the $30,000 bail, he was ordered to report to the Narcotics Control Bureau branch in Kuala Belait on a monthly basis starting on February 1.

The defendant was warned against committing other offences while in Brunei. His passport was also returned to him. A further mention of the case was scheduled on April 23.
