Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Rector Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal recently urged unemployed graduates to join the institute’s alumni association to learn new skills and develop networks.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Dr Hj Norarfan said graduates from the university should make use of its alumni association for the sake of their future careers.

“Some graduates are unemployed for a long time. Probably they’re lacking confidence to apply for a job or don’t have certain skills to offer companies,” he said.

He said UNISSA set up the alumni association recently with the aim of gathering former graduates together to contribute to the development of the university as well as to help them find jobs and teach them new skills through workshops.

“We created the alumni association recently and are planning to officiate it this year. Once we officiate it, we hope every graduate can benefit from it,” he said

Dr Hj Norarfan said there are many benefits of an alumni association such as providing a large network of professional contacts, career services and training services.

He added that the university is also encouraging former students to learn more about starting a business.

“The alumni association usually conducts workshops for its members to learn how to improve their job interview skills.

“They need to be more practical. In these modern times, graduates from any university need to be more independent and expect less from the government. Instead, they should start their own business and can begin with a small-scale enterprise,” he said.
