UNISSA planning Shafi’i encyclopaedia
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
UNIVERSITI Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) is planning to publish an encyclopaedia on the Shafi’i school of thought, or Mazhab Shafi’i.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, UNISSA Rector Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal said in an effort to further elevate UNISSA’s academic status, staff at the university are determined to conduct a wide range of research for the encyclopaedia.
“The encyclopaedia will have four chapters and summaries related to the four schools of thought under Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Islamic theology) which are Shafi’i, Hambali, Maliki and Hanafi,” he said
“We are conducting research on various fields such as the economy, law, ibadah (worship), business practices, religious rites and other important matters related to the Shafi’i theology. It will also include definitions, articles, timelines and illustrations,” he said.
He said lecturers at the university who are conducting research for the encyclopaedia have their own skills and excel in specific knowledge.
“Every field is related to Islamic teachings. For instance, Mazhab Shafi’i also explains about hukum (religious rulings) in business practices.”
He added that the presence of foreign academic staff from Al-Azhar University and Cairo University is making it easy to conduct research for the book.
Dr Hj Norarfan said UNISSA through its Centre of Mazhab Shafi’i began compiling information for the encyclopaedia last year and recently completed the first chapter.
He said the encyclopaedia will also feature three different languages - Malay, English and Arabic.
“Once we’re done with the project in 2017, the encyclopaedia can be one of the contributions of Brunei for Muslims worldwide. Hopefully, it can benefit the general public for research purposes or anyone looking for reliable information on hukum in all aspects of life.”
