OVER 9,000 new books were added to the Kampung Pandan Library last year, boosting membership and book loans, which had dipped in 2014.

Assistant Officer Dk Bongsu Pg Maiddin told The Brunei Times recently that the library, which will mark its 10th anniversary this year, received its largest supply of books from the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) to date in three main deliveries last year.

Some 6,724 of the 9,195 new additions were reference books on Brunei, including useful information about the country’s history, demographics and culture, while another 1,098 new books were for adults and over 900 for children.

“We receive a supply of books every year. But this is the most received annually to date, taking our collection to 37,233. Back when we first opened, we only had 8,987,” said Dk Bongsu.

The new additions are believed to have increased book loans last year which totaled 6,453 compared with 5,914 the year prior. Membership is now at 4,450, having grown by 209 last year, an improvement from 185 new members in 2014.

“The number of loans and visitors has declined when you compare the immediate period after the library first opened, but last year’s improvement will hopefully spark a gradual, sustained rise,” she said.

Dk Bongsu expects libraries to continue to be popular despite the advancements of electronic books, pointing out that most of the library’s collection isn’t available yet online.
