SCHOOL leaders were urged to reflect and go beyond the curriculum to help students get the most out of their school life.

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman said this during yesterday’s fifth National Education Forum held at The International Convention Centre, Berakas.

He said that his recent school visits have strengthen his belief that school leaders play a crucial role in affecting the overall attitude and performance of their school’s population.

Acting Director of Schools Zaman Hj Gapar, meanwhile, said principals and headmasters as school leaders should prioritise both instructional leadership and curriculum leadership.

“It is important for all principals and headmasters to understand and distinguish between the two. Curriculum refers to the ‘what’ while instruction refers to the ‘how’.” said Zaman.

He explained that curriculum leadership is the preparation, planning, content and message of instructions while instructional leadership refers to the implementation, methods and strategies used to carry out the curriculum.

“Administrators and school leaders should play both roles as curriculum and instructional leaders.” said Zaman, adding that quality leadership is crucial to helping schools achieve their goals.
