THE Council on Social Welfare (MKM) is calling on the public to donate gently-used clothing towards its Hari Raya charity drive for needy families.

Clothing donated will be given to underprivileged families who cannot afford to buy new clothes for the festive season.

“Due to the overwhelming response we had last year, we have decided to start (the clothing drive) early this year. This will enable us to sort out the donations received according to quality and sizes,” said MKM.

Last year, the NGO helped more than 200 individuals from 60 families during Ramadhan and Hari Raya.

Zubaidah Dato Paduka Hj Abu Zar, head of MKM’s Children Committee, said all clothing must be washed and in good condition, and that the organisation will not accept underwear or socks.

She added that clothing not distributed during Hari Raya will be used for emergency assistance to fire victims.

MKM will stop accepting donations on May 31, and distribution of clothing will be carried out during Ramadhan.

The NGO said financial donations are also welcome, but that cash donations must only be received by five designated members or cheques can be made out to “Majlis Kesejahteraan Masyarakat”.

The organisation said last year there were individuals posing as MKM members, who asked donations to be sent to other places.

For more information on financial donations, members of the public can contact Yusof Halim at 8754288; Intan Kassim 8721403; Hamidah Lakem at 8770312; Zubaidah Abu Zar at 8983155 and Sarbiah Yassin at 8845458.

Receipts will be given for all financial donations.

For clothes donations, items can be collected from the donor or can be dropped off at No 3, Simpang 204-9-14, Jalan Sungai Akar between 10am and 8pm.
