THE Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society's (BDRCS) Belait branch recently elected its first youth leaders in a bid to move the society forward and ensure future leadership succession.

BDRCS Belait’s assistant director Mohd Mustaqim Hj Mustafa said the election of a male and female youth leader last week coincides with the establishment of a dedicated youth bureau for its Belait branch, who will be groomed by the executive committee to be future leaders.

“At our recent annual general meeting (for Belait), the executive committee made the move to set up a youth bureau to inject more energy to push and develop new initiatives while also ensuring there will be well-trained individuals to lead the society in the future,” he said.

The assistant director was speaking on the sidelines of a charity run at Sayydina Ali Secondary School last weekend.

Nurul Raihah Syazana Syukriah @ Diana Abdul Rahim was elected as the female youth leader and Ak Muhd Amiruddin Pengiran Jafaroddin as the male leader.

The assistant director said Belait's youth bureau was also tasked with raising the profile of the humanitarian non-governmental organisation in the district, by attracting more members who can increase their ability to extend aid.

“We are hoping that with the establishment of the bureau, which follows the lead of BDRCS in Bandar, we can recruit members and play a part in expanding local youth’s minds to be of service to their community,” he said.

BDRCS Belait currently has 70 active youth, which the executive committee and the bureau wants to increase to at least 100.

Aside from annual obligations to assist paramedics from the Ministry of Health in providing first aid during national observance and commemorative days, the society plans to hold cleaning campaigns and charity fundraising.

Internally, the society will have regular meetings and training to make sure their first-aid skills stay sharp, with outgoing executive committee members also playing a special advisory role to the youth bureau.

Three schools in Belait currently have BDRCS cadet groups; Sayydina Ali Secondary School, Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School and Anthony Abell College.
