MEMBERS of the Singapore Brunei Youth Leadership Exchange Programme (SBYLEP) are calling for donations in the form of diapers as part of the nationwide International Volunteers Day donation drive this Sunday.

Brunei is hosting a nationwide campaign – known as ‘Day of Action’ – comprising various volunteering efforts and donation drives on Sunday to observe International Volunteers Day.

For the donation drive, SBYLEP is accepting both adults and children diapers, said SBYLEP member Syed Yassin Syed Anayatullah yesterday.

“The donations will be collected at all youth centres in the four districts simultaneously. There will be volunteers handling the collections. The diapers will then be distributed to the main hospital at each respective district,” he said.

“We have no estimation on the number of diapers (that will be collected during this donation drive), but based on the previous projects, we collected almost 1000 diapers,” he added.

SBYLEP organised a similar donation drive on November 15 last year, where they collected almost 1000 packs of diapers in the Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts.

The diapers were then donated to patients of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

Syed Yassin said SBYLEP had been conducting several charity events since 2014. One such event is ‘Read or Take it’ or ROTI.

The ROTI movement was established to cultivate a reading culture and unite the book community in the sultanate.

Approximately 6,000 reading materials were recorded at last year’s edition of ROTI which ran for five days.

Members of the public were required to first read their chosen books or reading materials, before being allowed to bring them home after 6pm.

The books were given away on the last three days, focusing on the ‘take it’ element.
