THE Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) honoured 22 of its officers and personnel for rendering more than 20 years of service in a ceremony held yesterday.

The MPRT civil workers received their Long Service Medals in conjunction with His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 68th birthday.

In the same ceremony, 38 MPRT retirees, from 2013 and 2014, were also presented with Service Certificates.

MPRT Minister Yang Berhormat Hj Ali Hj Apong awarded the medals and handed out the certificates to the honourees.

Awardee Hj Muslim Hj Yussof, who has been in service for 24 years, said he felt overwhelming joy for receiving the medal because it was unexpected. “We were only told about receiving the medal a few days before this ceremony, so it came as a shock to me at first,” said the 49-year-old. He urged civil servants, no matter from which ministries, to perform their duties with vigour and responsibility.

Husin Hj Jumat, another recipient of the Long Service Medal, said government officers should be steadfast in improving their performance and to remain committed in carrying out their duties.

Husin, who has been in service for 25 years, added that there was a need to always improve services rendered by the government so that the public’s confidence would not falter. “Whenever members of the public have any inquiries or complaints, they should be taken care of immediately (because) we cannot make them wait too long or it might affect the public’s perception of our department or ministry,” said the 49-year-old.

Meanwhile, Panjang Samsu, who retired in 2013 and one of the recipients of the certificate, said that he felt grateful because his service under the ministry was appreciated. “It’s good that a ceremony like this is being conducted because it reminds retired civil servants that all the work that they rendered while in service was being recognised,” he added.

Also present at the ceremony was Deputy Permanent Secretaries Wardi Hj Mohd Ali and Hj Khairuddin Hj Abd Hamid together with various department heads, senior officials and ministry’s personnel.

Dr Hj Mohd Hussain Pehin Penyurat Hj Ahmad, the Deputy Rector of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, gave a talk during the ceremony in conjunction with Maulud Nabi. The event was held at the Setia Pahlawan Hall at the ministry.
