A BLAZE completely destroyed the top floor of a house in Sg Bakong, Kg Lumut yesterday afternoon, despite fire fighters bringing the flame under control within five minutes.

An emergency call was placed at 1.46pm, with five fire trucks carrying 21 personnel arriving 13 minutes later.

None of the four people occupying the house was injured in the fire, which was brought under control using 13 hoses drawing from a water tanker and a nearby fire hydrant.

Sungai Liang Station Commander Muhammad Ali Hassan said that authorities were treating the cause of the fire – estimated to have caused $105,000 in damages – as “suspicious”.

The house, which is over 30 years old, belongs to the late Hjh Salmah Wahab, who passed away last year. According to her children yesterday, the house is being occupied by one of their brothers, who allegedly rents out the space to a family.

“We (siblings) were not fully aware of what the arrangement was in renting out the house— for how much and to who exactly,” said Hassan Timbang. Their brother, who allegedly rents out the house, was not at the scene yesterday afternoon.

Three policemen and two personnel from the Department of Electrical Services were on hand to assist the Fire and Rescue Department, as well as the village head of Lumut 1, Yang Berhormat Hj Md Shafiee Hj Ahmad and village head of Lumut 2 Abdul Rahman Hj Hashim.
