A RAPID response from Kuala Belait's Fire and Rescue station doused a fire, which broke out at the workers’ quarters, from spreading to a sawmill factory’s main site yesterday.

A call was made to the Fire and Rescue Department at 9.12am, which responded minutes later by dispatching three fire trucks from the Kuala Belait station located less than five kilometres away from the Sg Duhon industrial area.

The firefighters brought the blaze under control within two hours. No injuries were reported in the fire, which was estimated to have cost $39,000 in damages.

According to the Fire and Rescue Commanding Officer of Belait District Branch 'B' Muhd Shahreeni Hj Mohd Yusof, a stove left unattended was believed to have caused the fire, which mainly damaged one of the staff quarters which housed five workers.

“The house was made of wood with zinc roofing, but we managed nevertheless to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to the other quarters and the factory itself,” he said.
