THE Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School (SUAMPRIPAD) claimed there is no problem of overcrowding at the school despite its growing number of students.

“We do not have any issue with overcrowding because we have a new (extended) building for the school which houses ten more classrooms,” Principal Hjh Rusidah Hj Talip said in an interview with The Brunei Times.

The new building has science laboratories and classrooms for Year 10 fast track and Year 11 students.

She noted a growing trend of students enrolling into the Arabic school and said that SUAMPRIPAD is keen to take in more teachers to keep up with the rising demand.

“When the new intake comes in next year, the school might need to open extra classrooms so of course we need more teachers. We have forwarded our request (for more teachers) to the Department of Islamic Studies (JPI) which will resolve the matter,” she said.

Asked on the new Arabic school in Katok due to be completed in September 2016, she said that the school is intended for SUAMPRIPAD students.

InsyaAllah if there is no problem or delay, all students from here will move and have their lessons there in 2017. Then the current building here could be used as an Arabic preparatory school,” she said.

Currently, there are 1,066 students studying at the school which accommodate over 40 classrooms with 124 teachers.

There are seven Arabic secondary schools in the sultanate: SUAMPRIPAD; Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Secondary School (SMALHB); Mahad Islam Brunei; Sekolah Persediaan Arab Bandar Seri Begawan (SPA BSB); Sekolah Persediaan Arab Temburong (SPAT); Sekolah Arab Belait (SAB); and Sekolah Arab Sungai Akar.
