A GAS leak from a domestic supply pipeline was detected yesterday in Simpang 30 along Jalan Raja Isteri in Seria, forcing the Fire and Rescue Department to shut off household gas supply to residences in the area.

The Seria Fire Station, backed by the SPARK Fire Station responded to the incident close to 2pm yesterday, after residents in the area placed a call complaining about the smell of gas emanating from a field nearby.

Assistant Commanding Officer of the SPARK Fire Station Mohd Rosly yesterday said fire fighters had initially feared the leak was the highly flammable hydrogen gas (H2) during preliminary investigations. “We managed to detect the source and then isolated the valve. Remedial works are currently being carried out,” added Mohd Rosly. Residents nearest to the field were ordered to evacuate yesterday afternoon after the leak was confirmed. Firefighters have sealed off the leaked area while maintenance work is being carried out.
