Singapore minister wraps up visit

SINGAPORE’S Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli concluded a two-day working visit to the sultanate yesterday aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation and friendship between the two countries.

During his visit, he attended the opening of the Knowledge Convention 2015, which was launched by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on November 9.

The convention, with the theme ‘Wasatiah as the Basis of Universal Welfare’, is being held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

According to a press statement from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Masagos met with Minister of Development Dato Paduka Hj Bahrin Abdullah.

“The ministers had a fruitful discussion on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in environmental matters,” it said, adding that Masagos also met with senior officials from the development ministry.

As part of his working visit, he also made a courtesy call on Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awg Othman at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) building.

Prior to the visit to MoRA, Masagos had a meeting with the State Mufti, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Awg Abdul Aziz Juned, as well as other senior Bruneian leaders.

During these meetings, Masagos and his counterparts reaffirmed the warm friendship between Brunei and Singapore.

Earlier in the afternoon, he also visited Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) in Gadong.

The minister engaged in a dialogue session with the faculty and students on the ‘Muslim Community in Singapore’ and met Singaporean students studying at the institution.

In the dialogue, he highlighted some of the key milestones and achievements within the Muslim community in Singapore in recent years.

A brief introduction on UNISSA’s background and development was presented by Deputy Rector Dr Hj Mohd Hussain Pehin Penyurat Hj Ahmad.
