A TABLE with a unique blend of adjustability and technology captivated visitors and judges yesterday to emerge as the 'best idea' in Politeknik Brunei's (PB) first Entrepreneurship Exhibition for its School of Science and Engineering Lumut Campus.

The table prototype, dubbed the 'Evolutionary Surface' (Evo-S), impressed its audience with its functionality, seen through its adjustable legs, which can be raised to a standing height, and a swerving table-top which can change angles to suit its user.

Developed by 10 well engineering students, the table also features a distinctive glass panel on its table-top, which has LED lights encased within to provide the table with a striking look without consuming much energy.

“Our target was to build a table that was more portable and functional than your average table, but also have an aesthetic appeal for the modern-day user,” said the team leader of the Evo-S project Mohd Hifdzur Azmi Hj Mohd Zain yesterday.

The project is part of a semester-long compulsory module on entrepreneurship designed by PB for all first year students, with the majority of assesment based on developing an innovative product or service.

Mohd Hifdzur added that the table's nifty features such as its ability to lengthen to standing height served a functional purpose, and were not developed as gimmicks without potential for everyday use.

“It is known that sitting puts a lot of pressure on the back, especially if you do so for prolonged periods. That is why we developed the option of doing work standing,” he said.

According to Entrepreneurship Module Coordinator Goh Chai Li, the exhibition is a culmination of the module's main project, and is designed to test the students ability to develop and market their product to a wide audience.

“We brought students from other schools to come in and vote for which of the 43 groups on display they liked best,” said Goh.

Mass voting, combined with internal judging from PB staff and external judging from Universiti Brunei Darussalam's (UBD) Entrepreneurship Village decided the overall winner.

Muhd Firdaus Muhd Jeffery, who led Evo-S's sales pitch, said he learned the importance of marketing through the project.

The Acting Director of PB, Denis Ho Mun Tai, opened the exhibition yesterday morning, while Head of Core Education at UBD’s Entrepreneurship Village Abu Mah Da Hj Abdul Wahab was on hand to present the awards in the afternoon.
