US fellowships open for applications
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
APPLICATIONS are now open for Bruneian youth who wish to participate in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Spring/ Winter 2016 fellowships in the United States.
In a statement, the United States embassy here said applicants can choose two types of fellowships - the YSEALI Academic Fellowship for students aged 18 to 25 and the YSEALI Professional Fellowship for working professionals aged 25 to 35.
US Ambassador to Brunei Craig Allen said with nearly 35,000 youths involved throughout Southeast Asia, the YSEALI network has helped young people start projects that are improving lives in their communities.
“YSEALI is also forging cross-border friendships and partnerships and developing individual leadership skills. It is encouraging to see young people give back to their societies,” he was quoted as saying in the press release.
The fellowships aimed to build the leadership capabilities of youth in the region, strengthening ties between US and Southeast Asia and promote an ASEAN community.
Fellowship themes in 2016 will include civic engagement, social entrepreneurship and economic development, economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and local governance.
YSEALI is a brainchild of US President Barack Obama to focus on critical topics identified by youth in the region.
Students interested in the academic fellowship may visit http://brunei.usembassy.gov/yseali.html. The closing date for applications is November 1, 2015.
Young professionals interested in a professional fellowship should visit https://youngsoutheastasianleaders.state.gov/professional-fellows/ for programme details. The closing date for the professional fellowship is December 1, 2015.
