THE Postal Services Department yesterday received the keys to their new $3.782 million Kuala Belait post office from the Public Works Department (JKR).

Located opposite Belait’s Arabic School along Jln Dipa Negara in Mumong, the new Kuala Belait office was tendered out to Double Stars Contractor Sdn Bhd, which began building the office in April 2012 and completed it by December last year.

JKR Acting Assistant Director for Kuala Belait Justina Liew Vun Ching was on hand to present the keys to Postmaster-General Hj Md Manan Hj Lakim.

The new Kuala Belait post office began operations earlier this week, with post office boxes scheduled to be transferred over the next several months.

The new building is scheduled to be officially opened on Monday.

Surah Yassin and Ratib Al-Attar were later recited at the new office as well as a thanksgiving prayer to mark World Post Day 2015.

World Post Day is celebrated in over 190 countries today, recognising the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss capital.

The Director General of the Universal Postal Union, Bishar Abdirahman Hussein, said the postal system, the oldest medium of communication, still plays a key role in the sending of information and goods.
