A BRUNEIAN man lost his house in Kg Tunggulian, Sg Liang to a fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Alias Hj Ajak, who lived alone in the house, said he was out with his friends past 12am when fire took place. The Sg Liang Fire Station received the call at 2.36am, immediately deploying 18 firemen in three fire trucks to the scene.

However by the time the firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to both storeys of the detached house, destroying most of its upper floor, with only the pillars, stairs and section of the bottom floor of the house intact.

According to a senior official from the Sg Liang Fire Station, the fire took 10 minutes to bring under control. Total losses are estimated at $72,800.

The 34-year-old said the home, constructed in 1989, belongs to his father, and was rented out until a few weeks ago.

“It has only been slightly over a week since I have moved back in (since the fire happened),” he said yesterday.

Despite the damage, Alias, who is currently unemployed, said he would continue living on the bottom floor of the house, in a small section relatively unaffected by the fire.

“I will live here for the time being as I do not want to trouble my friends or relatives,” he said.

The 34-year-old previously worked offshore for a private company, but said he had to stop due to health issues.

Meanwhile, a sawmill at Kampung Serambangun, Tutong caught fire yesterday.

State broadcaster Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) said the fire was brought under control in 10 minutes.

It was reported that the Fire and Rescue Station of Branch Operation E received a distress call at 1.15pm.

Three fire engines and 16 personnel were deployed from the Tutong Fire Station and Bukit Beruang Fire Station.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and estimated amount of losses were yet to be determined. (Additional reporting by Rafidah Hamit)
