THE Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) yesterday reassured that the oil seep detected in Kampong Ayer does not harm the environment and residents’ health.

In a statement issued yesterday, the department said there was “negligible quantity of hydrocarbon released” following monitoring of the seepage at the water village’s Kg Lurong Sikuna.

Last Saturday, the EDPMO said it detected oil sheen on the surface of the water at the affected area.

“There is negligible impact to the environment and no safety or health concerns raised. From past experiences of similar events in Brunei, it is expected that the release will seal naturally,” the department added.

It further said a barrier has been put in place to contain the seepage, and that the department will continue to monitor and dispose of any gathered hydrocarbon.

The department did not disclose the cause of the oil seepage.
