THE Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), along with the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB), were crowned champions in the Decorative Arch competition held in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 69th birthday celebrations.

The ministry – which won the ministries and departments category – received an $800 reward, along with a trophy and a certificate.

KUPU SB came first in the colleges and schools category and received $800.

In an interview with The Brunei Times on the sidelines of the prize presentation ceremony at the Public Works Department (PWD) building yesterday, the director of Building Services under the department, Kok Yuk Huh, said the competition was a step in strengthening the patriotic spirit of Bruneians.

“We want to showcase His Majesty’s birthday by adding more colour to the country. This is why we hope for more participants to join annually,” he said.

The director said the competition also helps improve the public’s creativity towards showcasing their love for the monarch.

He, however, revealed that the number of those participating in the annual competition has been decreasing over the years.

There were a total of 16 participants in 2014. This year’s competition only saw 15 participants.

“We are not forcing people to join but it will be good to have more participants because it shows the country’s love for the monarch. It also showcases your creativity and the locals’ patriotic spirit,” he said.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development Hj Muhammad Lutfi Abdullah presented the awards to the respective winners.
