A YOUTH from Kg Lambak Kanan emerged victorious yesterday in the ninth Brunei-Muara District Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran Murattal Reading Competition.

18-year-old Abdul Wafi Hj Ibrahim was crowned champion after competing with 11 other contestants from other villages in the Brunei-Muara District during the final round of the competition hosted by the Lambak Kanan Area 5 National Housing Scheme (RPN) Village Consultative Council.

In an interview, Abdul Wafi said he participated in the competition by his own will and hoped to get more blessings from Allah SWT for his future endeavor.

The second-year Information Technology student from the Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR) felt that reading the Quran is the most effective way to help students to go through revisions and examinations at school.

“Young people should make the reading of the Quran as a way to get through with challenges and hurdles in life,” said Abdul Wafi, who believed that following the teachings of the Quran will make the individual a successful Muslim.

The competition was held in conjunction with the 69th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The event was held at the Kg Sungai Hanching Mosque.

According to a member of the MPK Lambak Kanan Area 5, Hj Abdul Rahman Safar, the preliminary round of the competition was held on August 2 with 50 participants.

12 participants were shortlisted to compete in the final competition.

“There were 18 male youth and 20 female youth participants in the competition during its preliminary round. This shows that our youth stand firm in Islam,” said Hj Abdul Rahman.

Presenting the trophies and cash prizes to the contestants was the Minister of Development, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

In his speech, the minister lauded the initiative undertaken by the MPK members in a bid to build strong community towards the objective to make mosques as a venue to hold religious lectures and activities.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi also urged residents to adopt Quran reading in their lifestyle as this could promote the political stability and economy.

He said that holding strongly to the teachings in the Quran would ensure that Brunei will accomplish its vision of becoming a zikir nation.
