APPROXIMATELY 40 per cent of the 153 participants in the second intake of the E-Government National Centre’s (EGNC) ICT Youth Development Programme (ICT YDP) have found employment at various companies, the EGNC’s director said yesterday.

Muhammad Norshafiee Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil said that 63 of the participants are currently employed. Eight of the participants were pursuing further studies and 84 were still in the process of looking for permanent employment.

“In this regard, we at the EGNC will carry out further initiatives to aid these youth in finding employment through counselling sessions. We will also be providing career advice where applicable,” he said.

He was speaking during a graduation ceremony for the participants held at the EGNC yesterday.

Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar handed out certificates of completion to the participants.

Two of the participants – Dk Siti Norafizah Pg Aminorizam and Najib Ahmad – received special mentions for receiving “Distinction” certificates.

Among those also present at the ceremony was Deputy Permanent Secretary for IT and E-Government Adi Shamsul Hj Sabli.

According to an EGNC statement, the ICT YDP participants completed the six-month programme in July 2014.

The programme was held in a three-month class (or training) and three-month work attachment format.

Among the areas in which the participants received training were the ICT technical area, media design, graphic design and video editing as well as website development.

Participants were also provided ‘soft skills’ training in the form of religious talks, conversational English courses and motivational talks to improve their work ethic, attitudes and interpersonal skills.

The participants also took part in social work such as beach cleaning campaigns and charity activities with the Children’s Cancer Foundation (YASKA), Pusat Ehsan and the Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA).

The ICT YDP is organised by the EGNC with support and contribution from the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), the Local Employment and Workforce Development Agency (APTK) and the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE).

It was created as an alternative education channel for school-leavers aged between 18 and 25, who have obtained four O-levels or less but are enthusiastic about ICT development and work opportunities in the country. Members of the public who wish to seek more information about the ICT YDP or to apply for next year’s intake can do so by visiting www.ydp.gov.bn.
