New compactors help keep BSB clean
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
THE addition of three Mitsubishi refuse compactors to the Vehicle Support and Maintenance Section under the Municipal Department last April have boosted the capabilities of the department in keeping Bandar Seri Begawan clean, said the head of the Rubbish Section yesterday.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, Hj Abdul Mutalib Hj Momin said that the refuse compactors have helped lessen the workload despite the amount of rubbish remaining high within the Bandar Seri Begawan municipality.
Head of the Vehicle Support and Maintenance Section Sheran Hj Shaari said that the refuse compactors had been especially useful during the peak periods of Ramadhan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“With the new refuse compactors, we can cope better and are able to provide the service on time. It has increased our efficiency and scheduling,” said Sheran.
Each refuse collector has a capacity of 16 cubic metres. They were introduced to help accommodate the increasing amounts of waste in the areas serviced by the BSB Municipal Board.
In a previous report, it was stated that the Rubbish Services Section functions with 14 teams of five, including the driver.
These teams service about 70 to 100 pickup points within 10 different zones throughout the BSB municipality.
According to statistics collected, routine collections carried out by personnel in Bandar Seri Begawan saw a total 484 trips throughout the month of July, 2015. The month saw 911,649 kg of rubbish collected.
The previous year saw the section conduct 510 trips to accomodate 980,282 kg of rubbish.
This is not inclusive of the additional pickups of refuse from Ramadhan’s ‘Gerai Perayaan’ in the capital.
It signifies a decrease in the collection of rubbish for the same month over the two years.
