THE impact of academic research must be measured through the social, cultural and economic benefits it creates, a visiting British professor said.

Professor Eran Edirisinghe, director of Research at Loughborough University’s Department of Computer Science, said research should not only result in academic publications.

During a talk at Universiti Brunei Darussalam yesterday, he said it is important to convert research into enterprise.

He defined enterprise as academic engagement with business, public and voluntary organisations that is aimed at knowledge transfer.

Professor Edirisinghe also discussed examples and obstacles that one can face when pursuing enterprise, and lessons learnt from working with industry players.

Organised by UBD’s Faculty of Science, the talk was titled “Enterprise: Research that Matters”.

In a statement issued yesterday, UBD said Professor Edirisinghe has published more than 150 conference and journal publications, and supervised 24 PhD students to completion.

Among those in attendance at the talk yesterday were students as well as academic and administrative staff of UBD.
