EIGHT students from local tertiary institutions yesterday departed the sultanate for China to attend a two-week educational programme focusing on ICT organised by Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd.

The programme, which is a hands-on work experience training and cultural interchange under the ‘Huawei Seeds for the Future’ initiative saw five undergraduates from Institut Teknologi Brunei and three undergraduates from Universiti Brunei Darussalam take part.

The fully funded study trip will end on August 22.

Some of the activities that will be conducted include a comprehensive hands-on work experience programme in Beijing and Huawei’s Headquarter in Shenzhen.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, one of the participants who is an in-service student, Clement Wong Lee Peng, said that the programme will benefit them in terms of enhancing their knowledge as well as practical skills in the field of ICT.

“The participants would get more exposure about the current or latest global technology used.

“For the first few days, we will have the opportunity to learn China’s cultural heritage such as their calligraphy, language as well as tai chi (Chinese martial art).

“We will also be visiting Huawei’s headquarter in Shenzen. We will be viewing their manufacturing process,” said the third year student.

He noted that the gained information will be shared with coursemates back in Brunei.

Similarly, 22-year-old ITB student Nurafifah Samsul also said that the programme will give her the opportunity to have a firsthand experience in seeing how the ICT industry works.

“I want to know more about technology. With this programme, it gives us a chance to observe and learn new things,” said Nurafifah.

The eight participants are the first intake from Brunei to the global CSR flagship programme which was initiated in 2008.

According to a press release from Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd, the programme is aimed at developing local ICT talent, enhancing knowledge transfer, promoting greater understanding of the ICT sector, and improve and encourage regional participation in the digital community.

“Huawei is a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider with the vision to enrich life through communication.
