THE Director of the Land Transport Department (JPD) yesterday reminded members of the public to remain vigilant when driving on the road, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.

Dr Haji Supry Hj Ladi, who is also the chairman II of the Brunei National Road Safety Council (BNRSC), told reporters on the sidelines of JPD’s site inspection at Jalan Telanai that motorists should always prioritise their safety, especially under rainy conditions.

The site inspection was held following an accident involving three cars on Thursday.

According to police, a 74-year-old foreigner who was behind the wheel of the car that instigated the accident died. The other drivers sustained no injuries.

An autopsy was carried out on the deceased yesterday. Police said that the 74-year-old had died of natural causes. He had a coronary artery disease prior to the incident.

The police, in a statement, added that the death of the foreign national was the cause of the accident.

The inspection was a regular practice following any reports of incidents involving fatalities, said Dr Hj Supry,

He said the inspection is usually held to determine the causes that could have led to the accident.

Dr Haji Supry used the opportunity to remind motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good order, adding that drivers need to slow down during downpours.

He also reminded members of the public to always check the condition of their tyres.

This includes ensuring that the tires still have tread on them to prevent aquaplaning and that they have correct “air pressure” to avoid premature wear and tear.

Motorists should also make periodical checks on spare tyres to ensure they are still in working condition.
