Wasan student attends Asia-Pacific Conference on Education and Training

A STUDENT from the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Wasan Vocational School (SVW) Campus left for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday to attend the Asia-Pacific Conference on Education and Training (ACET) from August 3 to 5.

The conference entitled ‘Making Skills Development Work for the Future’ serves as a platform for exchanging experience and perspectives on skill development policy and practice, identifying obstacles and determining direction in four thematic areas: ICT in Techincal Vocational Education and Training (TVET), skills for economic development, partnerships and greening TVET.

A press release from the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) said that Hj Muhd Yashreen Hj Sehia will be delivering his paper entitled “Youth perspectives on skills development and employment” at one of the concurrent sessions at the conference.

The paper will focus on empowering youth through relevant education and training for employment.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Hj Muhd Yashreen said that he did not expect to be chosen to participate in the conference and felt proud.

Hj Muhd Yashreen said that he was told to do a presentation on youth perspective on skills development and employment.

“I proceeded to collect data from youths inside and outside the school. I met them personally on their opinion and found that most of them share the same view.”

Hj Muhd Yashreen said that he could not share his findings until after the conference.

Alhamdulillah teachers at school have also been so supportive in terms of helping me improve the presentation and slides.”

Hj Muhd Yashreen added that he hopes youths in Brunei can see the importance of technical education.

Dr Paryono, Deputy Director for Professional Affairs and Research Manager at SEAMEO-VOCTECH said that the participants were chosen based on a set of guidelines.

“UNESCO Bangkok gave a guideline such as he or she may be a student or has background in technical or vocational education.”

Acting Principal of the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Wasan Vocational School (SVW) Campus, Zaitunah Hj Kurus said that Hj Muhd Yashreen was named excellent student during the 21st Technical and Vocational institution for the 2013-2014 session.

“This was when he participated in the Skill Certificate 2 programme in Fish Husbandry at Wasan Vocational School (SVW).”

“As the acting principal and teacher who taught him before, I am very proud and grateful for his achievement as being chosen to participate in the conference and representing the country.”
