THE Belait District Office reached out to 139 less fortunate families last weekend, providing them with food and drink essentials with Hari Raya Aidil Fitri less than a week away.

The donations, including rice, cooking oil and sweetened beverages were donated to the families’ respective homes with the assistance of Village and Mukim Consultative Council members across Belait.

Muhd Norizan Abdullah, who contracted Japanese Encephalitis in 2013, was amongst the recipients at his home at the National Housing Scheme in Panaga yesterday.

The disease left the 26-year-old unable to stand on his own or speak properly, with his wife Nurjannah Tahir needing to take care of him round the clock.

The couple, who live alone, are relying on welfare assistance from the Community Development Department (JAPEM), as well as donations made by relatives and members of the surrounding community.

“We are very thankful for the support from the public during this difficult time,” said 20-year-old Nurjannah, who was also able to collect the _kurnia peribadi _for her husband on Saturday.

Senior citizen Yussuf Momin, who lives in Lorong 3 with his son's family, said he looked forward to using the donated items for the upcoming festivities.

“Whatever donations given by the government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, I am always grateful for,” said the 77-year-old.

“We are always looked after under His Majesty’s guidance.”

Yussuf has four children; one married, two working and another serving jail time.

Meanwhile, the Belait District Office in a separate ceremony donated to 26 orphans from Kuala Belait town last Saturday. Assistant District Officer Hasmiron Hj Mohd Taib was present to hand over the donations at the Muhammad Jamalul Alam Mosque.
