A GROUP of ten comprising single mothers, converts and unemployed youth from Lorong 3, Seria, recently completed a one-month sewing course designed to boost their employability and future business endeavours.

The course, conducted by five teaching staff from the Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School (SVSB), was the first of its kind.

Secretary of Lorong 3’s Village Consultative Council (MPK) Hassan Masri said participants attended classes twice a week, typically from 8am to 2pm from May 3 until June 13 at SVSB.

“The main purpose of the course was to expose these residents to sewing and how to start and run a small business... so that they may better their financial status through their own actions,” he said.

Hassan said all 10 who completed the programme offered positive feedback.

He however pointed out that five participants had dropped out before completion of the course. “We (MPK) do face this challenge, not just for this programme, but for others as well. The villagers tend to show up for the first classes but some will drop out later,” he said.

“Most of these residents cite other commitments elsewhere, but we need to emphasise that they need to follow through with such programmes as it will benefit them in the long run,” he said.

Hassan added that a second sewing class with SVSB is scheduled for early next year, with short computer and IT programmes also planned.

Participants who successfully completed the course received certificates of participation from Lorong 3’s Village Head Hj Sadin Hj Ibrahim in a ceremony on Wednesday morning.

SVSB’s principal Akandi Hj Abd Razak, along with the teaching instructors, also attended the ceremony.
