THE Council on Social Welfare (Majlis Kesejahteraan Masyarakat or MKM) will continue its food distribution programme for the needy this Ramadhan, serving hundreds of meals to less fortunate families.

MKM President Datin Paduka Hjh Intan Hj Mohd Kassim, said the charity will distribute cooked meals for sungkai (breaking of the fast) until June 30, and will also give away Hari Raya hampers to underprivileged families on July 5, as part of their annual ‘fidyah’ scheme.

She added the essence of the _fidyah _scheme is for Muslims who are unable to fast to donate food to the needy as part of their religious obligations.

In Islam, fidyah is a type of payment distributed to the less fortunate, to compensate for each day of fasting missed by an individual during the month of Ramadhan.

MKM will hold a mass sungkai for needy families at Stadium Restaurant on July 10, followed by a Khatam Al-Quran on July 12.

“All these activities are part of our religious obligations as Muslims,” Datin Paduka Hjh Intan said.
