Air Force celebrates 49th anniversary

THE Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) yesterday celebrated its 49th anniversary with a thanksgiving and awards ceremony at the Punai Hall, Rimba Air Base.
In a speech to mark the event, RBAirF Commander Brigadier General (U) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Wardi Hj Abdul Latip pointed out that the organisation has shown positive improvements and achievements over the past year.
Among the progress he highlighted was the restructuring of the RBAirF, which led to the establishment of the Operations Group and Support Group as well as the upgrading of the Training Division into the Training Academy.
He said the bilateral exercises as well as symposium and interaction programmes have also enhanced defence diplomacy at operational and tactical levels. The RBAirF participated in numerous exercises including the Air Guard with Singapore Air Force.
Stressing the importance of training, discipline and vision, Brigadier General (U) Dato Hj Wardi said all major training must be properly planned in order for personnel to achieve the standard and preparedness that have been set.
He said all personnel were expected to have a high level of disciple as well as adhere to the laws enforced by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) and country, adding that action will be taken against anyone found violating those rules.
During the ceremony, the commander presented awards to outstanding RBAirF personnel Captain (U) Amierul Halpi Hj Talib, Sergeant (U) Azuan Mohd Ismail, Corporal Nurizzah Hj Jumat, and civilian Sarinah Hj Hidup.
Meanwhile, the Training Wing was crowned this year’s overall excellent wing.
There were also awards for excellence in administration, physical endurance and discipline.
Other events held in conjunction with the anniversary celebration included a tahlil for Al-Marhum Sultan Hj Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien and Al-Marhumah Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit as well as a regimental dinner at the Officers’ Mess, Berakas Garrison.
The beginning of Brunei’s aviation history in the RBAF dates back to 1965 when the contract with Worldwide Helicopters Company was signed for the purpose of providing medical services in remote areas.
