ENROLLMENT to Belait's only Arabic school has dropped slightly from 52 in 2014 to 45 this year, as the school continues to maintain strict entry requirements and tests.

Principal of Belait's Arabic School Hjh Noramalina Hj Md Ali said the school, which only accepts students enrolling beginning Year 5, has a current capacity for 60 to 70 students per year.

“The current enrolment we have is fitting the school's capability. With 52 students entering Year 5 this year, we have divided them into two classes, but we have a maximum capacity for three if student enrolment were to rise to above 60,” she said.

Hjh Noramalina pointed out that since the school opened in 2013, which introduced secondary Arabic education to the district for the first time, overall interest from the public in Belait towards studying Arabic has increased.

“The school has allowed a better avenue for students to develop themselves before going to either Mahad Islam Brunei in Tutong (for males) or Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School for females,” said the principal.

The school has also managed to keep a record of a 100 per cent pass rate for the Primary School Assessment (PSR) since 2006, with ten per cent of Year 6 students able to achieved 5A's last year.

“Nevertheless, the majority of class periods for Year 6 students are on Arabic Langauge and religious education.

"Out of 60 periods, the subject allocated with the most individual periods is Arabic with 10, followed by religious education with 15,” she said.

The principal added that any drop in attendance amongst students is being monitored on a monthly basis, with consultation directed to any students with attendance dropping below 85 per cent.

“We are monitoring attendance very closely to make sure any problems students have are identified early and can be solved. Generally, attendance is not a problem for us because the students and parents have made a commitment to enrol and study here themselves,” she said.

Belait's Arabic School currently has a student population of 183 across Years 5 to 9.
